This updated ham and cheese sandwich is honestly so yummy! Like I really can't tell you how yummy it is, you just have to try it to find out! Trust me on this one, if you like garlic, mustard, bacon, ham and swiss cheese. It’s inspired by the Cuban Sandwich with elements that provide kind of a sweet and sour flavor to it. A grilled sandwich is my favorite type of sandwich. And it’s an easy weeknight dinner when you want something fast.
I love to pair this grilled sandwich with my guacamole recipe. These sandwiches are great for any occasion. For the Super Bowl or other parties, I have served these as a sort of ham and cheese slider by cutting them in 4 equal pieces and placing a toothpick in each one. And of course, this recipe is easy to double.
You can add as little or as much garlic as you want, though I wouldn't recommend more that a clove per sandwich. If the cloves are large then use less than a whole clove. And don’t worry about garlic breath - if you’re honey has garlic too, neither of you will notice it.
I took the photos of this Updated Grilled Ham and Swiss sandwich in Salmon, Idaho at our campsite.

On the bottom half of the hamburger bun, spread 1 T of mustard evenly. Then sprinkle minced garlic evenly on top of the mustard. Then add 1 slice of Swiss cheese, 3-4 slices of ham 2 pieces of bacon (break each piece of bacon in half to better fit on the bun), then add 4-5 pickles and desired amount of cilantro.
Repeat the process for each of the next 3 sandwich’s.
Swipe the remaining bacon grease from the cooked bacon on the bottom of each bun. Then brown (grill) each side of the sandwich in a heated frying pan or other flat grilling surface like a griddle, on medium heat for 3 minutes on each side or until each side is sufficiently browned and crispy. Watch it closely for signs of burning.
